I would like to know where we stand about permanent access to Manoel Island. Till now, we have been obliged to content ourselves by accessing the place only on weekends and only during specified hours.

After the coverage of the hullabaloo raised at practically the end of last summer, we were promised that “soon”, after some “infrastructural works” which had to be undertaken, access on foot would be allowed on a daily basis.

All this came out last September, when Justice Minister Owen Bonnici headed discussions with the Midi consortium. But we are still in limbo. We are still being denied our rights for what is, without a speck of a doubt, ours to enjoy.

Being a regular visitor there, during every weekend this winter, I was surprised to see the amount of people going in, tourists and locals, and the disappointment during the rest of the week when they had to turn back. What is holding things up, even now that summer is practically on the doorstep? I’m sure that a lot of people are determined to press for what is theirs in the coming months.

Every day the Midi Group and the authorities are denying us of what is rightfully ours. The Justice Minister would do well to see to it and the least he can do is come out with a reassuring deadline.

Do we have to cut our way in again?
