Mqabba boosted their promotion hopes when they beat rivals Vittoriosa Stars, yesterday.

Clive Mizzi’s men fully deserved the three points that enabled them to keep the pace with their fellow promotion contenders. On the other hand, this was Vittoriosa’s second successive defeat.

Mqabba started brightly and Paul Chimezie almost put them ahead when he beat the Stars offside trap but was denied by Karl Magri.

Three minutes before the break the Stars came close when Andre Farrugia’s half volley finished just over.

Mqabba scored what proved to be the winner on 72 minutes. Chimezie was fed by Michael Borg and the Nigerian kept his poise to bury the ball home.

The Stars threw more men forward late on with Jamie Pace seeing his effort saved by Jurgen Debono.

In stoppage time, substitute Liam Gauci controlled the ball inside the area but was denied by the onrushing Debono.
