Paragon Europe is taking an active role during Malta’s EU presidency by hosting various major events in fields such as corporate governance, climate change, transport, energy, innovation funding, intrapreneurship and unemployment.

Paragon Europe was set up in 2004 with the aim of leveraging opportunities that EU accession was about to bring to Malta. The company’s seeks to contribute both in Malta and in Europe to the objectives of the EU social agenda and the ‘headline targets’ of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

“At Paragon Europe, our vision is to assist local and regional authorities to source EU funding opportunities and implement EU-funded projects. Our commitment to excellence is now being extended to Malta’s EU presidency. This is why Paragon Europe is launching a calendar of events that will be held over the coming months,” said Edwin Ward, chairman of Paragon Europe.

The first conference, ‘20th European Corporate Governance Conference’, will be held on May 4 at Le Meridien Hotel, St Julian’s. It will be hosted with the support of EY EAME (Europe, Africa, Middle East), a major sponsor, and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice.

The conference will explore the theme ‘Innovation and digitalisation in company law’ and the impact on the wider corporate governance debate while discussing recent changes in corporate governance in the global context in relation to capital markets transparency, ongoing improvements, digitalisation processes in governance as an advantage across the EU.

The second conference, ‘Towards a Zero Carbon Economy in the Mediterranean and Beyond’ will be held on May 29. It is organised by Paragon Europe and Climate-KIC with the support of the Environment Ministry.

It will discuss global warming and the fact that if climate change is not mitigated, in 30 years’ time Malta could be very different to how we know it today. Global warming will lead to more extreme and haphazard weather patterns, prolonged Saharan-style heatwaves, more intense rain periods and longer, dryer spells.

It will also discuss how innovation will play an very important role in confronting the challenges of climate change and how challenge-led innovation is driving efforts to develop approaches and technologies to confront climate change.

“Malta’s EU presidency comes at a complex time for EU integration. Malta is the last Mediterranean country to hold the presidency until 2020. This is an opportunity for the region and Paragon Europe wants to have a leading role in this historic time for Malta,” said Mr Ward.
