Renowned violinist Carmine Lauri has accepted to act as the Ian Tomlin Scholarship Trust’s patron. This is part of the trust’s commitment to promote further musical education in Malta by offering music scholarships to Maltese musicians wanting to study at Edinburgh Napier University.

Lauri has a distinguished career as a violinist, both as a solo artist as well as an ensemble musician. He is co-leader of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Concertmaster of the Oxford Philharmonic and guest leader of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. He also performs regularly with many other orchestras and has worked with distinguished conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Antonio Pappano, Riccardo Chailly, Pierre Boulez and Valery Gergiev.

Lauri’s commitment to music education and professionalism make him an ideal ambassador for the trust’s work

Lauri is regularly invited to judge final rounds of music competitions held in London and to coach advanced students at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He also regularly coaches students at the Royal Academy of Music as part of their orchestral training and conducts sectional string rehearsals to prepare the orchestra for their concerts.

The Ian Tomlin Scholarship Trust was set up in 1999 by the late Ian Tomlin to encourage musicians to pursue music education at the Ian Tomlin School of Music at Edinburgh Napier University.

To date, 11 Maltese musicians have benefited from the Scholarship Trust, all of whom have gone on to pursue successful professional careers in music.

There are currently two students – soprano Gabrielle Sargent and clarinettist Beatrix Calleja – studying at Edinburgh Napier University.

The Ian Tomlin Trust said Lauri’s commitment to music education and professionalism make him an ideal ambassador for the trust’s work. It is hoped that with the support of artists like Lauri the trust can not only carry on Dr Tomlin’s work but also expand on it to offer more possibilities to Maltese students.
