The 11th edition of the Gaulitana festival continues this weekend with two events and an exhibition.

Today’s performance sees the participation of Iacopo Sammartano on saxophone and Daria Aleshina on piano as they perform a varied programme, including the Maltese song Il-Mixta by Colin Attard.

Sammartano is a professor of saxophone at the Dante High School of Musical Arts in Florence while Russian pianist Aleshina was awarded the ‘best accompanist’ prize at several international festivals in Russia. She is currently a piano accompanist at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory of Music in Florence.

Tomorrow, Aleshina will perform once again in a piano duo recital with Giuseppe Fricelli. Their programme of works includes pieces by Debussy, Tarrega, Vannini, Brahms, Fauré and Messager.  They will also play Fricelli’s own Andante Espressivo.

Fricelli has been teaching for over 40 years, with several of his students now pursuing careers as concert pianists and teachers. He is also very fond of playing four-hand piano and often appears in concerts with his students. Aleshina was in fact one such student with whom he now regularly performs as a duo.

Also taking place today and tomorrow is an exhibition of limited prints by Pietro Annigoni, being held in collaboration with Verso l’ Arte.

■ Both performances take place at the Gozo Ministry Hall in Victoria at 7.30pm. The exhibition is on display within the exhibition hall of the ministry. Entrance to all events is free.
