The Marsa power station will be disconnected for good tomorrow with the plant no longer serving as a "cold standby" as electricity is now being generated from the Delimara gas-fired plants.

Enemalta will be carrying out high voltage cable works to disconnect the feeders linking the Marsa power station's last remaining cold standby plants from the national electricity grid tomorrow, a spokesman told Times of Malta.

These plants include Units five, six, seven and eight and which were commissioned between 1982 and 1987.

"Following this final disconnection, Enemalta will continue dismantling the last remaining units and structures of this power station," the spokesman said.

Enemalta started the process to switch off and decommission the Marsa power station in 2014. The power station was known to be a major source of pollution in the area for decades.

Electricity in Malta is also imported through the Malta-Italy interconnector.
