An encouraging entry list of 50 competitors took part in last weekend’s racing programme from the ASMK Pasta Poiatti National Championships for Autocross and Motocross, at Ta’ Qali.

In both Autocross sections, Modified and Standard, the competition was very close with no driver managing a clean sweep of three wins in the heats.

Philip Joe Vella, Jonathan Camilleri and Gordon Johnson, all driving Opel Corsa, managed the highest  amount of points in qualifying to secure their places in the Class A final.

They were joined by Matthew Borg (Vauxhall  Nova),  Karl Micallef (Ford Fiesta) and Noel Zammit (Fiat Punto).

Johnson, Micallef and Vella raced to the first corner but as the race developed, Johnson seized the lead, a position he did not surrender until the chequered flag.

Midway through the race, the marshals had to intervene following an incident involving Camilleri’s Opel Corsa. Racing was stopped for safety reasons but resumed without delay after the tyre barriers were put in place.

This was Johnson’s third win of the season. Vella was the runner-up on Sunday with Micallef settling for third place ahead of Zammit and Borg in that order.

The Class B final was won by Terence Azzopardi (Opel Corsa). Jason Martin (Volkswagen) came home in second place and Melo Zammit (Opel Corsa) third.

The other drivers to figure in this race were Duncan Delia and Ryan Scicluna, both driving Ford Fiesta.

The Autocross Standard Class final saw various cars stopping due to mechanical failures but Gozitan driver Johann Vella kept hold of his nerves to steer his Opel Nova to victory ahead of the Citroen AX, driven by Ian Fenech.

In Motocross, Clayton Camilleri (KTM) beat the challenge of Paul Muscat (KTM) to win the section’s major race of the day. Third place went to Kyle Camilleri, also on KTM.

Elvin Debono then rode his Kawasaki to victory in the Class B final. The Class C race was won by Vince Agius (Yamaha) and Paul Deguara (KTM) prevailed in the event for veterans.

The ASMK bandwagon will be crossing the channel to Gozo this Sunday for the fourth round of racing from the Enduro champion-ship, sponsored by Pasta Poiatti and Dunlop.

Racing, starting at 10am, will be held inside a quarry in Qala.  Joseph Scicluna (KTM) is leading the standings with 57 points.
