Traffic accidents increased by almost 1,500 in two years, according to figures compiled by the National Statistics Office.

Accidents in 2015 totalled 15,504 in 2015, up from 14,070 in 2013, reflecting the remarkable increase in vehicles on Malta's roads. The vast majority were minor traffic accidents, with July being the worst month for car crashes. Qormi hosts the biggest number of traffic accidents while Friday is the worst day for accidents. 

The stock of licensed motor vehicles increased at an average net rate of 32 vehicles per day, according to the NSO's Transport Statistics report. 

In 2015 the number of reported traffic accidents increased by 7.1% over 2014, with 37.5% of these accidents recorded in the Northern Harbour. Traffic casualties, however, decreased by 4.7% over 2014.

Passenger cars accounted for 79.4% of total licensed motor vehicles, but motorcycles registered the highest increase with 9.3%.

A total of 221 vehicles were stolen and in 43.9% of the cases the vehicles were recovered.

The number of licensed motor vehicles per 1,000 residents went up to 799 from 781 in 2014.

The report says that in 2014 total CO2 equivalent emissions increased by 16.4% from 2005 levels. A total of 84.1% of emissions were caused by fuel combustion from road transportation.
