A 73-year-old man with a long history of sexual offences involving minors has again been jailed after he was found guilty of involvement in the circulation of child porn.

Anthony Pandolfino, from Birżebbuġa, was arraigned today and charged with producing, uploading and downloading pornographic material involving minors.

The man, who had faced various past convictions relating to sexual abuse of underage persons, was also charged with being a relapser.

The court, presided by Magistrate Monica Vella, heard how Mr Pandolfino used to download child porn not only for his own gratification but also to share with his friends who "relished his same pastime".

The prosecution explained how the man even photographed unsuspecting victims when out and about at the beach or at some public event such as the airshow.

Evidence of Mr Pandolfino's illegal activity was discovered by the police when they raided his home from where cameras and other electronic devices were confiscated, the court was told.

Asked by the court what he had to say about the charges, the man replied "I downloaded the staff" signifying that he was pleading guilty. Given time to reconsider, the accused replied "Yes madame" when questioned about his confirmation of guilt.

The court declared him guilty and condemned him to five years in jail and a fine of €3,000. A treatment order was also issued. Upon a request by the prosecution, the court ordered the man's name to be listed under the Sexual Offenders Register.

Upholding a request by the defence, the court recommended that the accused be detained at Mount Carmel’s Forensic Unit until he recovered from a surgical intervention which he is to undergo next week.

The defence gave notice of appeal.
