The first set of matches from the National League after the split that grouped teams in the Champion-ship and Relegation pools, saw Division One title contenders Kalkara St Joseph and Floriana Ajax continuing where they had left off in the first phase following comfortable victories over Birżebbuġa Cox SC and Mosta Horseshoe.

Birżebbuġa were no match for Kalkara who won 8-0 while the Floriana side swept past Mosta Horseshoe 6-2.

The only scheduled match from the top flight Relegation Pool ended all square as Beland Bullseye and Gudja POs figured in a 4-4 draw, leaving both teams level on 14 points just one rung above the bottom place currently occupied by Juventutis Domus (two points).

In Division Two, Buġibba Munchies extended their lead at the top to four points after having the better of Floriana Ajax as second-placed Ħamrun Education could only manage a 4-4 draw against Senglea M. Conquest.

This is the first time this season where the top side in a tight championship is enjoying a lead of more than three points.

With five left, the Munchies can start dreaming of playing in the top flight next season.

Doubles competition

Recently, a large number of participants took part in the national doubles competition which saw brothers Norbert and David Attard defending the title they had won last season.

En route to the final, the Attard pair saw off the challenges of B. Desira/N. Ebejer 3-0; V. Busuttil/J. Agius 3-0; E. Scerri/T. Borg 3-1 and A. Scerri/G. Abela 4-2 in the semi-final.

In the final, the Attards were pitted against Kalkara players Mario Aquilina and Emanuel Ciantar who started superbly when claiming the first leg.

However, a reaction from the brothers saw them winning the next four legs to open a cushion 4-1 lead. They conceded the sixth leg but clinched the points they needed to seal the title yet again.

In autumn, last year, Norbert and David did the country proud when winning the prestigious doubles title at the Malta International Darts Open.

Meanwhile, after an absence of several years, the women’s singles championship was re-introduced this season with 18 players vying for the top honour.

Bev Keen won it in style as she only forfeited one leg in the entire competition following wins over Tracy Chambers 2-0; Elaine Liddell 2-1; Anne Hughes 3-0 and Stephania Buhagiar 3-0 in the final.
