Ruth Wilson returns to the National Theatre as Hedda Gabler in a production screening live in Valletta tomorrow as part of Spazju Kreattiv’s programme.

From director Ivo van Hove (The Crucible, A View from the Bridge, A Streetcar Named Desire) and producer Patrick Marber comes this modern retelling of Henrik Ibsen’s seminal work.

Just married and already bored, Hedda longs to be free. Railing against a life of crippling convention, Hedda cuts through the lives of everyone in her orbit.

Talking about the production, Wilson says of van Hove: “He deconstructs a play like no one I know… so you have to come with a very open mind”. Of the part she says: “Hedda is a very complicated role… she’s someone that can’t help but keep destroying things around her.”

“The bourgeois heroes of Ibsen always have a dream of freedom, of total independence,” van Hove explains, “but their dreams turn out to be pipedreams.”

The cast also includes Chukwudi Iwuji, Kate Duchêne, Éva Magyar, Sinead Matthews and Kyle Soller. It is being broadcast live from the Lyttelton Theatre in London.

■ The live screening is taking place tomorrow at St James Cavalier in Valletta at 8pm. Encore screenings are scheduled for March 23 and April 13. For more information, visit http://kreattivita.org .
