An obituary and photograph featuring Romeo Micallef and his wife Mary appeared in this newspaper last October 9. Now, months later, I came across correspondence I had with the erudite gentleman.

In my letter, in Maltese, I had asked him to autograph for me a mounted newspaper cutting.

For quite some time I had been listening to his programme on Xandir Malta. He had a particular way of presenting a radio programme about his travels abroad, accompanied by classical music, which I loved and still love.

He replied, naturally in Maltese, with a brief message on the back of the cutting: “With the best of wishes from your friend Romeo Micallef, August 21, 1991. I hope to continue to be heard on the radio as otherwise… I am 76 years old.”

He deserves to be remembered.
