The police have arrested two Romanian men who reportedly placed micro-cameras or other card skimming equipment on several ATMs and managed to defraud some 10,000 cards, TVM has reported.

The police confirmed the arrests.

Some €10,000 were withdrawn illegally.

The arrests were made on Saturday after one of the banks was alerted by a client who had been automatically informed by SMS that funds had been withdrawn from his account, when he had not withdrawn any.

The ATMs targeted by the fraudsters were in Bugibba, Qawra, Mosta, Rabat, Zejtun, Bulebel, Marsaxlokk, Valletta, Zabbar and Fgura.

The Romanians were identified from CCTV at the ATMs. One of them was arrested while withdrawing cash at an ATM in Qawra and the other was arrested at his residence in Gzira. They will be taken to court later today.

Another two Romanians managed to flee Malta and an international arrest warrant has been issued for them.
