I’ve always thought of February as a month of new beginnings primarily because January has always offered a pretty glum comedown from the Christmas festivities.

While many of us spend January trying to lose our festive fat, February is usually the time when we give up and look forward to getting back into some sort of swing of things.

Ever mirroring the ebb and flow of life, the fashion world seems to have taken a leaf out of this book and in fact, trend forecasts for the coming year usually emerge around this time.

After watching too many catwalk shows and You Tube videos for my own mental health, I decided to compile a short list of my own forecasts to help guide you all through the coming year.

Florals: Although florals for spring are hardly a ground-breaking concept (as Miranda Priestly reminded us in (The Devil Wears Prada), this year they seem to be absolutely everywhere. Whether you want to buy a summer dress, shoes or a flower crown for all those festivals you won’t go to, this year you can find florals all over the place and you’ll be able to wear them without looking like an extra from a Lana del Rey video.

Sportswear worn as outerwear: While many grimace when they hear Kim Kardashian’s name, there are few who can doubt the massive influence she has on high street fashion. As you may or may not know, her husband Kanye West has a clothing line called Yeezy and although I personally wouldn’t wear it, the fact that she has been endorsing her husband’s baggy jersey jumpers and transparent hooker heels has been instrumental in the spawning of hundreds of look-alike copies. I hadn’t seen a crop top being warn as outerwear since the days of the Spice Girls, but it would seem like the 90s are definitely back with a vengeance.

Exaggerated silhouettes: While the past 15 years have brought with them many a pointy shoulder pad thanks to revived fashion power house Balmain, the last couple of seasons have seen the Dynasty shoulder melt into a more soft-shouldered look that was last seen on Duran Duran in the golden 80s. I remember watching a documentary about the pay gap between men and women when I was really young and all the women who were being interviewed were wearing them, coupled with golden clip-on earrings and huge glasses that covered their faces. Ironically, it’s not only the jacket from that documentary which is en vogue again: the subject matter which was being discussed is, unfortunately, still very much relevant.
