Murder suspect Deniro Magri was today granted bail while the compilation of evidence in the case dealing with the killing of 25-year-old Sylvester Farrugia continues.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja said that there seems to be sufficient proof for Mr Magri to stand trial, but that the gathering of evidence must continue.

An emotional Mr Magri wept as he heard the news that he was to be released on bail, and relieved relatives celebrated outside the courthouse.

Mr Magri stands accused of killing Mr Farrugia last month in Marsa. He said he did not shoot to kill but was trying to scare off two men who were about to set fire to his house.

Bail was granted against a €20,000 deposit and personal guarantee of €30,000, as well as a series of other conditions. Mr Magri must sign the bail book at Ħamrun police station every day and deposit all personal documents in court.

He has also been forbidden from approaching any witnesses in the case and told he cannot go to Żurrieq, where the victim's mother lives.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Giannella de Marco appeared for Mr Magri.
