Two lifters from the Malta Weightlifting Association, Yazmin Zammit Stevens and Kieran Mifsud, will be travelling to Rome this week for a five-week long training stint with the Italian national team.

Zammit Stevens and Mifsud will be preparing for the European Championships – the first major meet of the year – to be staged in Split, Croatia, between April 1 and 9.

The Europeans will also double as a qualification event for the Commonwealth finals in 2018.

The training camp was made possible through the assistance of the Maltese Olympic Committee, Sport Malta and the close ties that exist between the Italian and Maltese weightlifting organisations.

Rodmar Pulis and Matthew Camilleri, two other national team contenders, will also be on their travels soon to participate in a high level weightlifting course hosted by the European federation in Kosice, Slovakia.

The Maltese association intends to keep investing in seminars of this kind to produce more experienced coaches within its fold in future.
