The government will be proposing a series of reforms to eliminate discriminatory practices against women, dating back years, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said.

"The government is taking initiatives and carrying out reforms at every level to combat inequality which still exists in our society, Dr Muscat said.

The Prime Minister was speaking during a meeting with the Labour Women's Executive, days before Women's Day.

Thanks to these reforms, women in Malta are becoming more independent, he said.

Among the themes discussed during the meeting was the discrepancy in wages for women carrying out the same jobs as men as well as paternity leave.

The meeting also discussed the need for more women in parliament to reflect society.
