■ When buying from an online seller for the first time we should make sure that we know who the seller is, from where he operates and how to get in contact with him.

■ Before placing an order, we should make sure that we know exactly how much the product or service is going to cost us.

■We should always opt to pay by credit card or through a secure payment site.

■ Before giving our credit card details we should make sure that there is a closed padlock symbol on the web page and that the web address starts with ‘https’.

■ A 14-day cooling-off period applies to goods and services bought online from an EU-based trader.
