Graphic Novels Library Malta, in collaboration with the Central Public Library, is organising two comics- related courses following an overwhelming demand and recommendation for courses from library patrons and comic book enthusiasts.

The courses are entitled Creating Comics and Understanding Comics.

The Creating Comics course is ideal for those who are planning a graphic novel or a short comic. It is intended for those who would like to draw or are simply interested in the work involved in creating a graphic novel. The course will give you the building blocks to perfect your skills and help you develop in the world of comics.

The course will be given by Peter Magro (STEAM), who will bring all his expertise and share it with all the participants in order to teach students the basics of comics book-making. Students applying for this course will receive a free copy of iDraw Comics and iDraw Manga, which will be used as a guide and also serve as a tool to practise on while creating comics.

Courses will help you develope in the world of comics

If you like reading comics and like to analyse them in detail, Understanding Comics is the course for you. Taught by Dean Fenech (Apocalypse Rocked), the course will centre on dissecting the comic book medium and explore all the different styles by looking at the evolution of comics through the ages and learning from legendary artists and writers who have impacted the medium throughout their careers.

A free copy of Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud will be given to all participants. This book will be used as a textbook for the course. By following the structure of the book, participants will gain a solid understanding of the comic book medium and they will be able to analytically look at comics and graphic novels in a unique way.

These courses will start in March and will be held at the Central Public Library in Floriana every Saturday from 10am until noon. Each course is 14 weeks long and after completion each participant will receive a certificate of attendance.

The cost of each course is €30.
