A newly-appointed board of directors for mental health services is to play a key role in developing a holistic strategy for the sector, the Health Ministry said today.

The board, which held its first meeting this week, is led by doctor Jan Chircop and was appointed by Health Minister Chris Fearne.

In a statement, the ministry said that the board would bring together stakeholders from across the mental health sector, including medical professionals and NGOs, as well as carer and patient organisations.

Dr Fearne said that the board would be advising him on how to further develop mental health services in hospitals and community healthcare settings, as well as monitor the provision of existing services.

Aside from Dr Chircop as chairman, other board members include doctors John Mifsud and Nazzareno Azzopardi as well as Therese Saliba, Catherine Galea, Edgar Borg and Stephania Dimech Sant. Anton Grech and Kevin Schembri serve as ex-ufficio members.
