Labour Party officials have paid tribute to party stalwart Nenu Buhagiar following his death at the age of 96. 

Mr Buhagiar was a well-known figure in Gzira and dedicated member of the PL, which in a statement expressing its condolences described him as a "soldier of steel". 

He served time in prison following the 1958 General Workers Union strike and subsequent riots. 

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was among the first to offer his condolences, tweeting that he was "extremely saddened" by news of Mr Buhagiar's demise. 

In a statement, the PL described Mr Buhagiar as a man who was universally loved "because he lent a hand to anyone who sought help, irrespective of who they were or where they came from."

It offered Mr Buhagiar's family its condolences.
