A public lecture on Leonello Spada has just been held at the Grand Master’s Palace, in Valletta.

Many insist that a painting at St Augustine’s priory in Valletta was painted by Spada. It depicts St Augustine washing Christ’s feet.

Originally, this altarpiece used to be found in a side altar at the first church of the Austin friars, in Valletta. Then, when the present church was built, it was placed over the main altar.

At the beginning of the 18th century, a local stone replica of the statue of St Augustine found in Via dei Portughesi, Rome, was made by Francesco Fabri and Spada’s painting was moved to the sacristy where it remains till this very day.

According to the late lawyer John Cauchi, the painting of St Augustine washing Christ’s feet belongs to Cassarino.
