I read the informative contribution by Michele La Ferla entitled ‘Inclusion of Catholics’ (February 20). At the end of the contribution the correspondent writes: “Let us not be like many of the Japanese martyrs and die in vain to hold firm to our religion but rather promote a Church that opens its door to all who wish to encounter the loving face of Christ.”

Could it be that the blood spilt by the Japanese martyrs to hold firm to their faith was decisive in how things later turned out in Martin Scorsese’s movie Silence?

Does not the same God, for whom the courageous Japanese martyrs died for, say: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isa 55:8-9)

Can God not work the way He deems right?
