Balzan collected three vital points to return at the top of the BOV Premier League after powering past Mosta 7-1.

Oliver Spiteri’s side are now leading the table with 48 points, as Hibernians will feature in tomorrow’s evening kick-off against Hamrun Spartans.

Meanwhile, Mosta remain in the midst of the relegation battle, despite earlier today they were given a boost after the Malta Football Association upheld their protest against Pembroke Athleta, rewarding them a 3-0 victory.

Mosta broke the deadlock on 21 minutes, when Lucky Oseghale triggered a splendid shot from just outside the box, giving Ivan Janjusevic no chance to parry.

Balzan equalised on 33 minutes through Alfred Effiong, whose towering header went past beyond Andreas Vella.

Bojan Kaljevic turned the tables just before half-time, as he capitalised superbly on Alan Da Silva Souza’s cross.

In the second half, Balzan carried on with their dominance as Matteo Piciollo extend the lead with a low-drive from the edge of the box.

The current leaders virtually wrapped up the victory on 62 minutes, when Kaljevic scored his second goal of the night and the 18th of the season.

Mosta collapsed after this goal, as the Reds prevailed three more times.

Da Silva Souza struck a close-range shot to list his name on the scorers sheet on 73 minutes.

Maltese forward Lydon Micallef, who replaced Alfred Effiong late in the second half, managed to grab a brace on 76 and 89 minutes.

First, he capitalised on a Piciollo’s cross from the left-hand side and in the second goal, he netted into an empty net after Vella miskicked the ball, as Balzan cruised to victory while regaining leadership.
