A young man from Żejtun was granted bail after pleading guilty to his involvement in an alleged VRT scam.

The accused, whose name is not being published as the police investigation is ongoing, was charged with receiving bribes and forging documents.

The prosecution explained how the accused's role as contact person in the alleged scam was to ensure that pre-identified vehicles would not be driven through the test lane. The court was told that the accused did not have the necessary password to access the VRT system.

On the day of the alleged offence, a car which had successfully made it through the VRT test was later found to be lacking the necessary requisites. In fact, the vehicle in question failed the general conditions and various other VRT conditions when driven down the test lane, the prosecution explained.

The court, presided by magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo, after taking note of the accused's guilty plea, put off the case for judgment.

The prosecution raised no objection to the defence's request for bail which was granted by the court against a personal guarantee of €10,000.

Inspector Sergio Pisani prosecuted. Lawyers Marion Camilleri, Amadeus Cachia and Yanica Vidal were defence counsel.
