The government has hailed figures showing that unemployment in January dropped to 2,889, which it said was the lowest figure since records started in the 1960s.

Unemployment dropped by 1,821 over the past year and by 4,461 since the general election.

The government observed that the drop in unemployment was most pronounced among young people, with a drop of 911 since March 2013, prompted by the Youth Guarantee Scheme.  

The number of Gozitans registering for work dropped to 522 in January from 742 in March 2013.

Among the long-term unemployed, the number of jobless dropped by 1,607 during the same period.

There was a 34% drop in unemployment among those having disabilities.
