It will be 60 years tomorrow since the first international football match played by Malta.

The match against Austria was played at the Empire Stadium in Gzira to a sell-out crowd. The Austrians won the game 3-2 after a late rally by Joe Griffiths’s boys saw the Malta team claw back two goals in the space of three minutes.

To record this momentous event in Maltese football, the Times of Malta will tomorrow carry a double-page feature by sports contributor Alex Vella, who on the day was a spectator. Mr Vella also spoke to Malta goaler Victor Scerri and goal scorer Sammy Nichol.

A video with Mr Scerri’s recollections and footage of the game will also be uploaded tomorrow on the website.
