Using social media for charity, promoting resilience development in children, clean food and energy, and revisiting the Great Siege of Malta are some of the many topics featured in the latest edition of Think magazine regarding ongoing research at the University of Malta.

One of the main stories is about a ‘baton’ that enables a ‘runner’ to rope in a crowd of followers on social media to raise funds for good causes.

Designed by Dr Franco Curmi and his team, the Heartlink platform enables a community of online supporters to contribute by logging in and donating to cheer the runner on.

In another story, Prof. Carmel Cefai and his team talk about an innovative programme they are working on to develop resilience in children. They have created targeted manuals for use in the classroom and at home by children, teachers and parents to learn this all-important skill which will help them through the hard times.

The generation of clean energy is the subject of another article on work being done at the University. At the Faculty of Engineering, wind and wave energy are being tapped in a system that will work to both cool and power buildings.

On a related green note, another article focuses on Prof. Shirley Ann Micallef’s work to provide cleaner food.

The edition also re-assesses Maltese history with a look at work that Prof. Nicholas Vella and his team are undertaking to uncover lost stories from the neolithic Kordin III site.

On a similar theme, Prof. Mallia Milanes puts to bed some myths surrounding the Great Siege of Malta.

Last but not least, an article in the magazine talks about a new initiative of the Research Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT) that encourages people to leave legacy gifts to fund research and thereby have a chance to leave a positive mark on Malta’s future.
