The popular Demolition Race, held annually by the Assoċjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi (ASMK) at this time of the year, will be held at the end of Sunday’s programme of racing at the Ta’ Qali circuit.

As in the 22 previous editions of the Demolition Race, all proceeds will go for charity.

The vehicular combat, an unusual spectator attraction, is pencilled in for the last event of the day, starting around 3.30pm.

Action gets underway in the morning with the opening rounds from the Pasta Poiatti National Championships for Autocross and Motocross.

Though keen drivers are finding it rather difficult to acquire old cars, 14 competitors have registered for the Demolition Race so far.

As most of them are seasoned drivers with plenty of experience in this kind of competition, it is difficult to forecast a winner.

‘Car smashing’ will again be the name of the game but safety rules to prevent mishaps and injuries will apply.

Meanwhile, another round from the Trials Championship was staged in San Pawl Tat-Tarġa, on Tuesday.

Among the competitors on the day was Antonio Leonardi, a former Sicily champion.

Leonardi rode his bike in Class A where participants had to contend with six sections on a testing circuit at the Hard Rock Quarry.

Damon Bonello, on a Gas Gas, enjoyed a perfect start, followed by Rowen Bonello (Beta) and Leonardi (Gas Gas).

The tussle for supremacy between these three riders was tight but in the end it was Damon Bonello who held his composure to win his first race of the new season.

Leonardi was second and Rowen Bonello had to settle for third place.

Class B competition was mainly contested by four riders – Tony Curmi and Daniel Inguanez (both Beta) Manuel Camilleri (Gas Gas) and Dennis Grech (Sherco).

Camilleri and Curmi held a slight edge for most of the distance but the points were close and the last section was to determine the winner.

The race eventually finished with Curmi topping the leaderboard followed by Camilleri and Inguanez in that order.
