A vox pop carried out in Republic Street clearly shows the Maltese love to splash out on Christmas presents.

“I always spend around €1,000,” a shopper told the Times of Malta amid the hustle and bustle of Valletta.

With 12 days left until Christmas, another respondent said he had already spent up to €500 on presents.

A random exercise reflected an online poll carried out in the last week which showed that 57 per cent of respondents planned to spend more than €200 on gifts this Christmas.

Just 24 per cent said they would spend less around €100 on Christmas gifts for their friends and family.

Many respondents suggested that the amount of spending during festivities is hard to keep track of... even harder to control.
