Guidelines to pharmacists on the sale of the morning-after pill are still being drafted by the Medicines Authority, even though pharmacies have started taking delivery of the product.

Following a months-long heated debate, the Medicines Authority recently announced that it had not only authorised the sale of the contraceptive but it would also allow it to be sold over the counter. The Authority had said it would be issuing guidelines to all pharmacists.

The decision came after despite a recommendation by a parliamentary committee that the pill should only be sold against a prescription, a recommendation which sparked a strong public reaction.

Medicines Authority head Anthony Serracino Inglott said when contacted that he was unaware that deliveries had started.

Asked about the guidelines, he said that these were still being drafted and would be handed out “once feedback is received”.
