Unifaun Theatre is holding auditions for a new adaptation of Ovid’s classic Metamorphoses due to be staged in July. Auditions will be held on Saturday at 6pm at Spazju Kreattiv Studio 1, St James Cavalier.

The modern interpretation is in Maltese and requires highly-skilled performers playing a multitude of roles. The play will be directed by Stephen Oliver and Dominic Said and is adapted by Adrian Buckle and Trevor Zahra. One of the most influential works in Western culture, the Metamorphoses has inspired such authors as Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. Numerous episodes from the poem have been depicted in acclaimed works of sculpture, painting and music. Comprising 15 books and over 250 myths, the poem chronicles the history of the world from its creation to the deification of Julius Caesar within a loose mythico-historical framework. Actors are needed as follows:

Actor 1(M): Cupid, The god of love. Acting age: 20s.

Actor 2(F): Melete (Muse 1); Venus, the goddess of love; Manto, Tiresias’s daughter; Procne, the daughter of Pandion, the sister of Philomela; Isis.

Acting age: 30s

Actor 3(F): Mneme (Muse 2); Cyane, nymph; Latona, the mother of Apollo and Diana; Iphis, raised as a boy. Acting age: early 20s

Actor 4(F): Aoide (Muse 3); Liriope, Narcissus’s mother; Diana, goddess of the hunt; Philomela, Daughter of Pandion and sister of Procne. Acting age: 20s

Actor 5(M): Apollo, god of the sun; Mercury, Jupiter’s messenger; Perseus, a comical Greek hero in Ovid’s portrayal. Acting age early 30s

Actor 6(M): Jupiter, king of the gods; Peneus, father of Daphne; Cepheus, Andromeda’s father; Pandion, King of Athens; Ligdus. Acting age 40s-50s

Actor 7(F): Juno, queen of the gods; Clymene, daughter of Tethys; Cassiopeia, mother of Andromeda and wife of; Minerva, virgin warrior and the patron of Athens; Niobe, Daughter of Tantalus and wife of King Amphion; Telethusa, Ligdus’s wife. Acting age: 40s-50s

Actor 8(F): Daphne, who is transformed into a laurel tree as Apollo seeks to rape her; Io, The daughter of Inachus; Coronis, a nymph; Echo, a nymph; Salmacis, A nymph;  Andromeda, daughter of Cepheus and Cassiope; Proserpina, queen of the underworld; Arachne, daughter of Idmon; Byblis, daughter of Miletus and Cyanee; Ianthe, Cretan girl who was engaged to Iphis; Myrrha daughter of Cinyras. Acting age 20s

Actor 9(M): Inachus, river god; Mars, god of war; Tereus, son of Mars; Cinyras, father of Myrrha and Adonis and king of Cyprus. Acting age 40s

Actor 10(M): Argus, monster with a hundred eyes; Phineus, betrothed to Andromeda before Perseus; Pluto, God of the underworld; servant; Daedalus, inventor and the father ofIcarus. Acting age: 40s

Actor 11(M): Phaethon, son of Clymene and the Sun; Narcissus; Hermaphroditus, son; Lycabas, one of the sailors who tries to delude Dionysus; Ilioneus, son of Niobe, killed by Apollo; Caunus, son of Miletus and Cyanne and the twin brother of Byblis; Hyacinthus, a beautiful boy loved by Apollo. Acting age: late teens

Actor 12(M): Petallus

Actor 13(M - child): Itys, son of Procne and Tereus; Icarus, son of Daedalus. Acting age: early teens.
