Spazju Kreattiv is showing the latest film by beloved veteran British film director Ken Loach, which once again focuses on life’s hardships.

Described as one of his finest, most rivetingly blunt and honest depictions of contemporary society, I Daniel Blake tells the fictional story of middle-aged widower Blake, a carpenter, living in northeast England who cannot work or get benefits despite his physical predicament after his recent heart attack.

Based on research and interviews carried out by screenwriter Paul Laverty, the film won best British film at the Evening Standard film awards and newcomer Hayley Squires, who plays a single mother also encountering obstacles claiming welfare, picked up an award for best actress. It also took home the award for most powerful scene, for its harrowing sequence set in a food bank in which Squires’s character is so hungry she eats from a tin of cold baked beans.

The Guardian reports that Loach’s film initially struggled to find funding but then saw support at Cannes, where it won the Palme d’Or, as well as from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The film has given Loach his best-ever results at the box office.

On accepting the award for best film, producer Rebecca O’Brien said: “This film is about people who are suffering in our country now, which is why it’s been noticed by the government and denied by the government, and why it’s been picked up by the opposition as an important film.”

■ I, Daniel Blake is screening tomorrow at St James Cavalier in Valletta at 9pm. A repeat screening is scheduled for the following Sunday, December 18 also at 9pm. The film is certified 12 and over.
