We keep hearing about vehicles losing control and hitting either a tree or lamp post or something else and the driver being grievously injured. What I would like to know is this – when an accident of this nature occurs does the driver undergo a breathalyser test, as is normal practice in other European countries? Is the vehicle checked to see if it is in fact road worthy?

If a breathalyser test is not taken on site because of the nature of the injuries then a blood test should be taken upon reaching the hospital. If the victim is found to be over the limit he should then be fined upon recovery, and points taken off that person’s licence.

The UK is serious considering life imprisonment for anyone causing death to another person through drink driving or while using mobile phones or speeding. Seeing what is increasingly going on here in Malta, our government should seriously be thinking along the same lines.
