Roma’s Kevin Strootman has been given a two-game ban for his part in the Danilo Cataldi’s sending-off in the Derby della Capitale with Lazio.
The injury-prone midfielder scored a 64th-minute opener, and in the celebrations squirted water at the Lazio bench before collapsing on the floor when unused substitute Cataldi raked his neck.
Cataldi was sent off and Strootman booked for over-cele-brating, but the Dutchman was yesterday banned for the crucial Serie A matches against Milan and Juventus.
Lega Serie A found that spraying water was “provocative” but could not be considered “violent conduct or seriously unsportsmanlike conduct”.
However, the fact that the referee sent off Cataldi for grabbing Strootman was reviewed, with TV images confirming “simulation” from the Roma player.
