We have been waking up to news of ethics being compromised every morning for several years now. We have become immune or resigned to this sad state, and we pretend to get on with our lives as if nothing is happening.

The truth for us has become the ‘good feel’, even if it is built on the suppression of our innate sense of what is good. If what is unethical is delivering the goods, then why bother about the good.

The ethical breaches happening around us are becoming so numerous that we are feeling simply overwhelmed. We move from one event to the other at the speed of sound and therefore forget the serious implications of each case. People seem only to think about elections and the daily wins of one party over the other, and the rest is of no importance.

The erosion of the land, the erosion of the environment seem not to worry many people. The current frenzy of construction on this little rock is literally rocking the foundations of anything called planning.

The supposedly good prevailing economy is creating an uncontrollable sense of greed and ambition which is dampening our care for others. Capital is no problem as long as the honey is flowing, even if we are not sure where it is flowing from, even if we are not totally sure about the morality of the source of the honey. As long as it is flowing and we can inebriate in it, that’s fine.

The erosion of people’s dignity at work and in society also does not matter, in the name of progress and earning money.

Libertinism in the name of progress is indeed hurting us, but again we appear to be numb to the damage

Libertinism in everything we do is engulfing us, and even if we are personally hurt, we look away, accepting it as the norm.

Libertinism in the name of progress is indeed hurting us and our society, but again we appear to be numb to the damage. Protests in many forms simply fade into wasted effort.

What people think matters little as long as the authorities invade our media with smiling, innocent, professional, reassuring faces, as if nothing is happening other than the great success around us.

Man is too busy to spend time on reflection. Technology is leaving little time for reflection. Messaging, texting and social media have taken over and conditioned our minds. What was supposed to enhance our lives has taken us over and taken control even of our (no longer) free minds.

It has taken over our basic ability of living together for each other.  Instead, we are made to live apart and only for ourselves. Like common sense, the common good is no longer common.

Man is losing his conscience.  Society as we have always known it is slowly fragmenting. The family is no longer central, even if we pretend that it is. A new form of order is taking over – a shell form. The shell is becoming the end in these post-truth times.

Never mind the core, the truth, what really matters. In a world folding itself back to nationalism, losing the core values and objective of our transient life may prove fatal to each and every one of us, both those behaving unethically and those turning their heads away or resigned to the fact.

It is certainly time to fetch the missing core of our existence.
