I write in response to the editorial dealing with antisocial behaviour (November 26).

We live in Triq il-Qawra, Qawra and have experienced first-hand being woken up at any time from 6.30 on a Sunday morning by the roar of motorcycles along the Coast Road and, sometimes, even the St Paul’s Bay bypass. We also have to put up with continuous dog barking, the noise of jack hammers used in the various developments in the area, bus engines across the road, the screech of tyres at the pedestrian crossing nearby and, now, even cockerels, yes cockerels.

Last May, we noticed two hens and four chicks in the fields behind us, where, we assumed, they had been ‘dumped’. These fields are surrounded by apartment blocks on three sides and a road and apartment blocks on the fourth side.

Some months later, I counted 10 mature chickens, including cockerels, some of which were seen in the road behind the field. Since then, peace in the neighbourhood has been shattered by these cockerels at all times of the day and night.

One cannot imagine the ear-splitting noise they make. Sleep is impossible. My wife contacted the St Paul’s Bay council, who referred the matter to the police, who said it was not a police matter. The council then referred the matter to Animal Welfare and my wife also e-mailed them. No reply or acknowledgement, of course. Other neighbours have also contacted the council and the police.

To this very day, there are still at least two cockerels that call each other at all times. We are desperate. It is unbelievable how people’s right to sleep peacefully at night can be so violently shattered.

Who can we turn to next?
