What do you think of the controversy over the draft Paceville master plan?

Although it has elements that can help to rejuvenate and change perceptions of Paceville to a more culturally pleasing one, it threatens local residents and their homes in the area. Chiara Vassallo, Bachelor of Commerce, Economics and Public Policy, HYBRID finance and external relations officer.

Youth for the Environment agree with the Chamber of Architect’s stance on the matter. While the concept of improving an overdeveloped space for the wellbeing of the pedestrians (i.e. the public interest) is the way forward, the current plan is highly flawed. Misha Grech, Bachelor of Laws (Hons), Youth for the Environment external officer.

Having a coherent plan to rebuild and re-structure all at once is the best way forward. On the other hand, there was not enough communication with the residents of the area and the stakeholders. Jacob Portelli, Bachelor of Laws (Hons)

Do you agree with the plan to reclaim land off the sea at Portomaso? Why/why not?

I think there is need for more caution and information on the impact this can have on what’s left of the environmental coastal communities above as well as underwater. Chiara Vassallo

I do not agree. Not only does it endanger marine life (posidonia meadows), but it also runs counter to the scope of the master plan (i.e. the public interest) given that this reclamation will result in the private use of the coast. Misha Grech

We are limited as to where we can build. Reclaiming land off the sea at Portomaso is an ideal situation to promote economic growth. However, one cannot deny the expense, feasibility and environmental dangers. Jacob Portelli

If you were to propose changes to Paceville, what would you suggest?

I would seek to remove Paceville’s negative connotations by finding solutions through the democratic implementation of proposals from local communities, social scientists, businesses and other stakeholders that would not threaten local residents’ homes. Chiara Vassallo

I would seize the opportunity and create the largest urban green area in Paceville and promote the initiative in order to create awareness on the benefits of green, open spaces in the midst of polluted areas. Misha Grech

I believe one coherent plan (as proposed) is definitely needed. Moreover, police enforcement, disciplined and responsible nightclub security staff as well as installation of CCTV cameras in the area are vital to ensure safety and security. Jacob Portelli
