Fresh from its resounding success with opera Carmen, the Aurora is set to continue with its 40th anniversary celebrations with a grand symphonic concert featuring the Leone Band tonight in Gozo.

Helmed for the 25th year running by Colin Attard, this November concert is an annual event although this year’s is bound to be all the more special in light of the anniversary.

The band will perform excerpts from Mikado, the first operetta performed at the Aurora, as well as from Bizet’s Carmen. Other significant music in the line-up includes film scores such as Mancini’s theme from The Exodus, a film that was screened to much success in the early days of the Aurora cinema.

The concert will come to a rousing finale with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture, the same piece played by the band at its opening gala night in 1976, then conducted by Joseph Sammut.

■ The concert is taking place tonight at the Aurora Theatre in Victoria at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. Entrance to the event is free with seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, interested patrons can reserve seats by e-mailing teatruaurora@leone.org.mt or through the website www.teatruaurora.com.
