Today’s event within the Malta International Organ Festival is a panpipes and organ concertin Valletta.

Featuring Dominique Aubert on the organ and Philippe Emmanuel Haas on the panpipes, the programme includes pieces by Charpentier, Gervaise and Praetorius, Corrette, Loeillet de Gant, Chédeville, Marais, Rameau, Dieupart and Delalande.

Aubert was initially taught music by his father and then moved on, aged 12, to study the organ with Rev. Pierre Rachet in Arles. Following this, he studied under Jean-Paul Lécot, organist and choirmaster of the Sanctuary of Lourdes, mainly focusing on the interpretation and the accompanying of the liturgy.

From 1976 to 1980, he was in charge of the organs at the St Julian church and at the church of St Trophimus in Arles. Since 1982, he has been the organist at St Peter’s church in Chennevières-sur-Marne, near Paris.

Aubert is involved in the practice of liturgical music and  is the composer of several psalms, hallelujahs, a cantata devoted to St Peter and also a Mass. Aubert has been the president of the association The Organ Friends at St Peter’s Church of Chennevières-sur-Marne since its foundation in 2001.

Swiss-born Haas studied panpipes and classical music in Berne, Switzerland, and at the Hilversum Conservatory in the Netherlands.

He has participated in several masterclasses for the interpretation of early and classical music on copies of historical instruments.

As a soloist, Haas gives concerts accompanied by the organ, the harpsichord, the harp or the lute, and as a member of ensembles of early music.

He is the artistic director and organiser of an annual Advent concert, dedicated to festive early music, at the church of Rötteln / Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg in Germany.

■ The concert is being held at St Augustine’s parish church in Valletta at 8pm. Entrance is free. The festival runs until December 9 with concerts taking place in various cathedrals, basilicas and churches across the Maltese islands. Full programme details can be obtained from www.MaltaInternationalOrganFestival.com. This space will cover the individual concerts on the day.
