John Azzopardi was reluctant to “take on” my “scholarly treatise” (October  27).

He feels unqualified to do so – or else he’s afraid to accept the evidence of Europe’s intellectual history questioning God’s existence.

In the recent past, he described my letters in the Times of Malta as “diatribes” and “salvos”. In his last letter, he called me “foolish” for not sharing his religious beliefs.

The epithets “fools” and “foolish” have been levelled against atheists by priests and laymen for the umpteenth time. It does not occur to these Christian believers that the same epithets could be hurled back at them for believing in a “Being” for which there is no evidence whatsoever.

It is ironic that Azzopardi calls me “militant” when he himself belongs to a Church that has been militant for the last 2,000 years. The Catholic Church launched eight crusades against Islam, persecuted the Jews for centuries and massacred Cathars, fellow Christians and “witches”.

That’s what I call “militant”!
