The unusual summer cinema festival which invites its audience to select the films to be screened is back for a special edition this Sunday.

This winter screening of the Triq Cinemoon Festival is taking place on Manoel Island. Working together with Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent, Funky Monkey will host an evening in which music, cinema and Manoel Island itself take centre stage.

The event aims to draw attention to the abandoned state of the island. The organisers believe that such a space should be public and enjoyed by everyone rather than a select few.

The evening kicks off at 5pm with a short tour of the island which will depart from the Funky Monkey accompanied by an experienced guide who will detail some of the island’s history and current situation. At 6pm, Spanish musician Racucu will hold a concert back at Funky Monkey.

At 7pm a film will be screened. As per Triq Cinemoon Festival tradition, this will have been chosen by the audience via the festival’s dedicated Facebook page. The proposed films for this edition, which carries an island theme, are Korean film Kimssi pyoryugi (Castaway on the Moon) directed by Lee Hey-jun in 2009, Spike Island (2012) from British director Mat Whitecross and US offering Swiss Army Man, directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert this year.

Following the film, Galician DJ Lofi Flow will take to the decks to entertain those gathered.

■ As with all Triq Cinemoon Festival events entrance is free. To vote for the film to be screened, look up Triq Cinemoon Festival on Facebook. The Funky Monkey is located on Manoel Island in Gżira.
