I couldn’t believe that Simon Busuttil is so politically naive when I read what he said on Radio 101 about the election of Donald Trump as President-Elect of the United States.

The leader of the Opposition appealed to Maltese and Gozitan voters to imitate American voters to “get rid of the establishment” in our country. This was another political gaffe for which Busuttil is well renowned when he makes off-the-cuff statements.

Little did he realise that when he appealed to Maltese and Gozitan voters to vote as American voters had done, he was actually telling them to elect a Labour government. Because the majority of American voters have voted for Hillary Clinton and not Trump by about two million more votes.

The only reason why Trump won the election is because the American electoral system is based on the majority of Electoral College votes and not the majority of the popular vote, as is our electoral system.

No wonder Simon Mercieca, a well-known PN opinionist and who had co-authored the report on the reasons for the PN electoral defeat in 2013, has predicted that the PN would win fewer votes in the next election than it did in 2013.
