Ten-year-old Nori (Val Maloku) and his father Gezim (Astrit Kabashi) earn their living by selling cigarettes in 1990s pre-war Kosovo. Gezim wants nothing to do with Nori’s mother and that should come easily to someone who is an expert at escaping the past. Now, he also wants to flee Kosovo, without Nori. Yet the young boy will stop at nothing in order to prevent his father from leaving, even if that entails a devastating accident, a perilous journey and an intense confrontation between a boy and his dad.

Babai is Visar Morina’s feature debut. He wrote and directed the film, winning the award for best director at the 2015 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film was also awarded three prizes at the Munich Film Festival in the German New Talent Award category for script, director and actor. It is the most expensive Kosovar film produced, with a budget of €1.7 million.

■ Spazju Kreattiv is showing Babai tomorrow at St James Cavalier, Valletta, at 8pm. It will be screened in its original version with English subtitles. For more information, visit www.kreattivita.org.
