I was disappointed in Peter Apap Bologna’s ‘Commitment of an ideal’ (November 11), in suggesting that I “present some of the usual rants of the English Eurosceptic”.

Firstly, I would like him to know that I voted “remain” in the referendum in spite of my many reservations. I believed that, in spite of its many shortcomings, if it were to survive effecting reform could only come from within and that the UK’s presence might have assisted that process.

This was no rant; I was simply stating the facts based on statistical and empirical evidence. The Brexit issue is an entirely different issue and Apap Bologna should have addressed the thorny issue of the sustainability of the euro.

The EU and the euro are only sustainable through political expedience and not economic strength. If Marine le Pen, unlikely though that is, were to win the French election and Matteo Renzi lose office, this would pose a very serious threat to the sustainability of the EU and the euro.

Also, if Apap Bologna wishes to comment on the weakness of the pound against the euro perhaps he should look at the euro/US dollar rate, which reflects the greater weakness of the euro.
