‘Towards an Innovative and Modern Sensibility in Sacred Art in Gozo 1900-1970’ was the title of an on-site lecture led by Mark Sagona, a visiting lecturer at the Department of History of Art of the University of Malta’s  Faculty of Arts. The lecture formed part of Mediterranea Festival. Sagona pointed out the subtle, gradual move towards modern ideas that can be seen in a number of paintings by Gianni Vella, Giuseppe Briffa, Robert Caruana Dingli and Emvin Cremona. He said this evolution continued until the 1970s when it was sadly aborted. Participants also had the opportunity to engage in discussions with Sagona in front of the works of art. Picture shows Sagona with the participants at the Augustinian church, Victoria, which contains two seminal works by Briffa.
