Will Donald Trump’s presidency impact your life? If so, how?

It’s too early to say what the Trump presidency will bring about. He is already changing his election-winning, aggressive tone to a more moderate, president-for-all one and this will also be reflected in his policies. So we have to wait to see how our lives will be impacted. Alfred Tabone, Masters in European Studies.

I don’t think Trump will directly impact my life as I am not an American citizen, but some of his more far-reaching policies may affect the world economy. John Navarro, Masters in Advocacy.

Yes, I think the Trump presidency could affect my life as America is one of the most powerful countries in the world. While it is still early to tell, I think the international view of politics will change. Nico Muscat, BA Archaeology, 3rd year.

What are some of the main effects that his presidency is going to have?

Without doubt, the White House will adopt a more conservative attitude. To top it off, the Republicans once again won control of Congress, so the conservative element in US policy will double. Alfred Tabone

Public attitudes towards minorities will suffer, as will civil rights and civil liberties. Xenophobia, sexism, Islamophobia and several phobias will probably increase. John Navarro

While there is a lot of concern about Trump’s presidency right now, we need to respect democracy and give him a chance. The US economy may benefit from more jobs in the manufacturing sector. Although I don’t agree with most of his ideas about immigration, if he deports many illegal immigrants from the US, it will result in a safer America. Nico Muscat

What change/s, if any, to the US electoral system would you like to propose?

None. The problem is not that Trump has been elected President. The true complication is that the US has failed to address several key issues which gave a person like Trump the opportunity to successfully attain the most powerful position in world politics. Alfred Tabone

I don’t feel sufficiently well informed to propose changes to the US electoral system, but seeing that Hillary Clinton received a higher number of votes, perhaps it is time for the US to adopt an electoral system that is more representative of the electorate’s wishes. John Navarro

The current system has been used for a very long time and it must have been adopted for a particular reason. The popular vote should be respected but this is not the first time the unelected candidate won the popular vote, but nothing was done about it. So this is an issue that needs to be studied very carefully before taking a decision. Nico Muscat
