GO announced that it will provide at least €11,000 during the current scholastic year to support Aqra Kemm Tiflaħ, a project to enhance classroom libraries and encourage children to read more.
The project, which is run by the Education Ministry’s National Literacy Agency, aims to supply every Years 1, 2 and 3 classroom library with 100 ‘high-appeal’ fiction and non-fiction books, 50 in Maltese and 50 in English. Other printed and interactive resources will also be given to pupils.
The support will draw from a €80,000 ‘GO for the future’ fund set up to invest in education and make science more popular. GO said other similarly funded initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks.
Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said: “Technology is ubiquitous in our lives and any successful career will require the ability to understand and use technology. Literacy, and a love of reading, are key to developing an interest in science.”
GO Chief Commercial Officer Kurt Camilleri said: “It is important that people have the skills to make the most of the opportunities that new technology provides. It is to help in developing these skills, that we have launched ‘GO for the future’.
