Hasselbaink sacked: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been sacked as Queens Park Rangers manager, the English Championship club said last night. Rangers drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest, a result that left the London side 17th in the table. Tim Sherwood, the former Aston Villa manager, is favourite to replace the Dutchman.

Boateng: Bayern Munich central midfielder Jerome Boateng has been ruled out of Germany’s international matches against San Marino and Italy after picking up an adductor muscle injury in their 1-1 league draw against Hoffenheim yesterday. The 28-year-old was taken off in the 82nd minute and will need a few days to recover, the German champions said.

Wolves: Paul Lambert has been appointed new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Championship club announced yesterday. The former Scottish international, who was previously in charge of five English clubs including Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers, replaces Italian Walter Zenga, who was sacked last week after only 87 days in charge. Wolves dropped into the bottom six after losing 3-2 at home to Derby yesterday.

Brown: Celtic captain Scott Brown is a doubt for Scotland’s World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley on Friday. The Hoops midfielder, who came out of retirement to help the Scots’ ailing qualification hopes, came off with a numb foot just after the hour mark of Celtic’s 3-0 Premiership win over Inverness at Celtic Park.

Zola: Gianfranco Zola is in talks with Inter about taking over as first-team coach, according to Sky in Italy. Inter sacked Frank de Boer last week after they won just four of their opening 11 Serie A games which left them 12th in the table. Former Villarreal boss Marcelino is reported to have held meetings with Inter’s Chinese owners in the last few days. It is understood that Zola – who has enjoyed limited success as a coach – will be asked to be Marcelino’s assistant  to give him an Italian-speaking coach.
