Malta’s contribution to the Alice Experiment at Cern, the rampage caused by diabetes, care at the end of life, and risky behaviour that gets people into trouble are some of the main topics covered in the latest issue of Think, the University of Malta’s research magazine.

The Alice experiment at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), which is seeking to uncover matter’s earliest building blocks, is a unique collaboration between 1,500 scientists. The magazine features  interviews with the University researchers contributing to the project.

Closer to home, Think looks at diabetes’ prevalence among the Maltese population and the work being done at the University to pare it back. The Diabetes Foot Research Group is seeking to develop a new detector that could help identify the disease earlier on in its development, enabling medical profesionals react faster to better people’s lives.

At a time when Malta’s government is faced with calls to make euthanasia available, Prof. Pierre Mallia analyses issues concerning improving the quality of life, end-of-life care and death.

Prof. Noellie Brockdorff talks about risk and why people are so bad at determining threats to their well-being.

Another story focuses on how solar panels could be made more efficient.

Think is also full of reviews, student stories, design and more. Topics range from porn to maps, the Master of Fine Arts in Digital Arts’ L-Gh exhibition, migrant issues, the University’s new radio telescope and Zaar, Malta’s first indigenous fundraising platform.

Think is available for free from stationers and Agenda bookstores. It is also available online at the links below.
